Altimet has been involved for many years in collaborative research and development projects, working alongside academic research centres, equipment manufacturers and industrial partners. These major projects demonstrate Altimet's ability to develop custom metrology solutions, integrated into complex and innovative environments.
From European programmes to national investment funds, our AltiSurf© instruments have been at the heart of three landmark projects in laser polishing, surface texturing and technical crystal manufacturing.
Altimet at the Heart of Research and Innovation
Altimet's involvement in major collaborative projects illustrates its unique positioning: a technical partner capable of adapting its metrology systems to the most demanding challenges in industrial research. Three landmark projects bear witness to this.
PoliMATIC® — European 7th FP Project
Led over three years by Fraunhofer IPT/ILT in Aachen with 12 technology partners, this European project aimed to establish a complete automated laser polishing chain for tooling and appearance parts. Altimet contributed by integrating an AltiSurf® 50 OEM module directly into the automated cell — deployed alternately in a robotic cell and in the laser polishing machine. The developments enabled process optimization through progressive finishing steps, supported by in-process metrology adapted to the specific constraints of laser polishing.
EQUIPEX MANUTECH-USD® — Femtosecond Laser Surface Texturing
Led by the GIE MANUTECH-USD consortium of 10 institutional partners, this excellence equipment project aimed to develop a multi-scale laser texturing chain for material surfaces. Altimet won this contract and supplied a custom-designed AltiSurf® 540, deployed at the High Technology Building in Saint-Étienne. This instrument uniquely combines chromatic, interferometric, low-force, wettability, indentation-hardness, sclerometry and local tribology characterization functions in a single, unified reference frame — a one-of-a-kind achievement. It is paired with advanced FIB/SEM/EBSD characterization equipment.
FUI CRISPOL® — Functional Technical Crystals
This FUI project brought together 7 industrial and academic partners around a shared objective: to develop, validate and industrialize a next-generation polishing process for synthetic single crystals — sapphire, crystals for lasers, LEDs and piezoelectric applications. Altimet contributed as a surface measurement instrument supplier, with an AltiSurf® 520 deployed on the CRISTALINNOV' platform, hosted in the Cleanspace© building where Altimet assembles its machines. The project improved the quality of finished and intermediate surfaces in cleanrooms ranging from class 100 to 10,000.
